The '70s are back this season, as is the rich and golden glow that was a stamp of the decade.
‘This summer’s skin-spiration comes courtesy of Farrah Fawcett’s deep and almost dusty sunset Miami glow,’ explains St Tropez tanning expert Jules Heptonstall. ‘Go matte, dark and add ample gold jewels.’
Indeed, at Henry Holland, skin expert Nichola Joss lent the hippy-dippy model army a ‘Woodstock tan’ by applying St Tropez Instant Wash Off Lotion, £10, with a generous dusting of bronzer atop. And at Preen, models showcased tanned, sun-kissed faces and bodies accessorised with ample freckles (surely the ultimate sign of a well-spent summer), completed with wafting clouds of ’70s candyfloss hair.
But with extensive sunbathing off the cards and a to-do list longer than this season's gypsy-style maxis, how can a girl recreate such skin perfection at home? Well, it’s funny you should ask because an emerging breed of new glow-givers have been designed to tend to the reluctant tanner – making the whole process quicker, easier and more fabulous than ever.
Meet the fastest fake tans in the West, for face, body and legs...
1. Insta tans
It has been a year of pioneering technology for the tanning world. First to wow us was St Tropez Gradual Tan In Shower Lotion, £14.50. Next up was Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals, £35, and Clarins Radiance-Plus Body Golden Glow Booster, which can be added to your body lotion for a customisable, multi-tasking approach to self-tanning.
Try an insta-tan if: you’re clever as you look.
2. Turbo tans
If the idea of slipping into your crisp white sheets while your tan develops is enough to bring you out in hives, then we have good news. A handful of express tanners now need minimal ‘brewing’ before you can dash to the shower and wash off the guide colour. Our favourites include UTan 40 Minute Turbo Tan, £25, and Fake Bake Luxurious 60 Minute Self Tan Liquid, £25.
Try a turbo tan if: you want a lasting seven-day glow in T minus 10.
3. Bronzers with benefits
Say hello to the new raft of marvellous multitaskers that act as both skincare and glow-getters...
Need to nourish? Fake tans can be drying, which is exactly what drew us to St Tropez Self Tan Luxe Facial Oil, £23, and Luxe Dry Oil, £25.
Firm and glow: Subtle tanning agents in the velvety soft He-Shi Overnight Ageless Tanning Balm, £22.50, work alongside millesis, jojoba protein and hyaluronic acid to boost the skin’s moisture levels and promote elasticity, preventing the signs of ageing and fatigue. Great for paler skin tones, too.
Lighten, brighten and bronze in one: Madame LA LA Bronzing Serum, £28, is infused with coco water and green tea to hydrate, tone and brighten.
Try these if: you are way too busy, important (and probably too cool) to add a tanning step to your timetable.
4. Whip-on, wash-offs
While the wash-off tans of old were sparkly, often off-key in colour and ran at the whiff of a rain cloud, the latest offerings couldn’t be easier to use. Sweep them on and appreciate their sheer, buildable formulas and staying power. We swear by... L’Oréal Paris Dream Legs BB Cream, £9.99 – with the bonus of blurring powers. Charlotte Tilbury Supermodel Body, £45, incorporates a cooling metal massage applicator and is adored by models and A-listers. By Terry Tea to Tan Hydra Bronzer, £55 – now for both face and body – uses waters and amber prisms to brighten and tan.
Try a wash-off if: you need an easy instant fix but struggle to commit.
