it takes a village to send an A-lister out on the red carpet, whether IRL or virtual, and no one knows this more than renowned make-up pros Nikki de Roest, Nina Park and Neil Young, who’ve been responsible for some of the most iconic red carpet looks in the business.
Neil caused a media storm when he created a neon pink eye for Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan for the Golden Globes in February, Nikki is a go-to make-up artist for the likes of Jodie Comer, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Bella Hadid, and Nina’s regulars include Tessa Thompson, Brie Larson and Laura Harrier, whose statement lip at the 2019 SAG Awards is still talked about. Here, Nikki, Neil and Nina give the inside scoop on how to get their A-list-worthy looks.
Neil Young's Hero Products
‘There’s a lot of pressure involved with red carpet make-up. Celebrities are scrutinised within a nanosecond of stepping out of their car and the images photographers capture never die. Getting it right is all down to preparation.’
Neil Young Red Carpet Beauty - Grazia 2021
'Yes, it's expensive, but Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Fluid Foundation, £110, is my go-to. I used it on Nichola Coughlan for the Golden Globes for barely-there coverage.' - Neil Young.
'The most important aspect of red carpet beauty for me is getting the skin right. I rely on priming products, like Bobbi Brown Illuminating Moisture Balm, £45, to add radiance.' - Neil Young.
'It's important I steer clear of concealers full of light-reflecting particles as they can look too light in pictures. NARS Radiant Creamy Concealers, £24.50, are perfect.' - Neil Young.
'I use MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Blush in Happy-Go-Rosy, £24, on most of my clients. It acts as a beautiful illuminator on deeper complexions.' - Neil Young.
'I used MAC Cosmetics Eye Kohl in Phone Number, £16, for SJP's signature smoky eye the night of her husband Matthew Broderick's West End debut.' - Neil Young.
'Star of Nicola Coughlan's Golden Globes look was the pink eye, so I wanted her lips pared back and glistening. Givenchy Le Rose Perfecto Liquid Balm in Perfect Pink, £25.20, was ideal.' - Neil Young.
Nikki de Roest's Go-To Kit
'After I’d finished Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s make-up for last year’s SAG Awards she had to decide between two Armani looks. I thought she was stunning in the midriff-baring one and she said, “Ah, if only I had more abs...” I offered to help her get a little more definition but I was kidding because she looked incredible already! Phoebe was shocked but said, “Yeah, I’m game!” In true Phoebe fashion, she outed herself when she accepted her award and said I’d painted on her six-pack! I’ll never forget that.’
Nikki de Roest Red Carpet Beauty - Grazia 2021
'Dior Backstage Eye Palettes, £39, are a key item in my kit. I use them all the time.' - Nikki de Roest.
'I use NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, £22, a lot and often give them to my client to keep in their clutch for touch-ups.' - Nikki de Roest.
'I use Angela Caglia Rosebud Eye Treatment Set, £45, to give my client a lymphatic drainage massage before applying make-up.' - Nikki de Roest.
'I love prepping skin with Bobbi Brown's Vitamin Enriched Face Base, £45, and often mix in a few drops of organic rosehip oil.' - Nikki de Roest. Try Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil.
'Giorgio Armani foundation is long- wearing and gives a gorgeous finish, not too matte or shiny.' - Nikki de Roest. Try the Neo Nude True-To- Skin Natural Glow Foundation, £28.47.
Nina Park's Make-Up Must-Haves
‘I love the team collaboration involved in the lead-up to the big day. Once I know what my client is wearing, the stylist, hairstylist and I jump on a group text to discuss what story we want to tell. It’s so rewarding to see the final look come to life on the red carpet.’
Nina Park Red Carpet Beauty - Grazia 2021
'Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation, £43, gives my clients a dewy second-skin finish that's perfect for editorial shoots and red carpets.' - Nina Park.
'I use Jillian Dempsey's Gold Sculpting Bar, £185, to increase a client's circulation and de-puff. It's amazing to use over the top of a sheet mask too.' - Nina Park.
'Chanel Le Crayon Levres Longwear Lip Pencil in Nude Brun, £22, is semi-matte and blends easily. I consider this a "my lips but better" shade.' - Nina Park.
'Weleda Skin Food, £13.50, is perfect for any dry areas. It also works as a highlighter across the top of a client's cheekbones.' - Nina Park.
'I love how smooth Surratt's Expressioniste Eyebrow Pencil, £38, is to apply and how it really mimics hair on application.' - Nina Park.
'Chanel Inimitable Mascara, £30, offers amazing lash separation, which is perfect if you like to layer up mascara.' - Nina Park.
