For a sultry smoulder...
The new smoky eye is easy to nail. 'Using just one soft-matte eyeshadow makes it feel lighter and more wearable,' says James Malloy, the pro behind the looks here. If it's not picture perfect, don't worry: 'that's what makes it modern.' Finish with a slick of mascara, like Diorshow Iconic Overcurl 090, £29.
For a luxe lacquer...
Glossed eyes are cool, but can they ever be wearable? James advises starting slow and building up to full lacquered lids. ‘Use gloss sparingly at first, either on the inner corners or tapped in the middle of the eye for a glossy highlight.’ Want to go full-throttle? Invest in a dedicated eye gloss to layer over your eyeshadow.
For a modern metallic...
Silver is going to be big this season. To ease your way in, swap your go-to black for a slick of silver or, to go all out, opt for this block of shadow that slopes down at the edges. ‘I was going for glam rock meets retro 60s,’ says James. ‘Try a wash of silver, or, for more intensity, spray your brush with water first before patting over your lids.' To keep focus on the eyes, swap lipstick in favour of Dior’s Rouge Dior Natural Balms, £33.
For a graphic liner...
‘For a modern take on floating liner,' advises James, 'draw an angle at the outer corner instead of a winged shape, applying just above the natural crease of your eyelid so that your statement liner doesn't disappear when you open your eyes.'
For a glowing base to complement statement lids, prep skin with Dior Hydra Life Fresh Hydration Sorbet Crème, £49, before dotting on the new Dior Forever Skin Glow Foundation, £40, over key areas and blending in.
For dialled up drama...
Love a feline flick, but want to mix it up? 'Play with texture - use a liquid liner pen for the top flick, then smoke out the lower lash line with a matte black shadow, which gives softness against the more reflective liner.' For an advanced look, 'Embellishment looks best when delicate - tiny beads, gems or cut-outs of craft paper.'
As for kit essentials: ‘I always carry micro-fine Q-tips dipped in micellar water to easily correct smudges and sharpen edges.’
For an avant-garde eye...
Rejoice: haphazard make-up is in. ‘Offset detailed eyeliner with slapdash eyeshadow for an interesting combo that pleasingly masks any mistakes,’ says James. ‘Circle the top and bottom lash line for definition before pressing either metallic pigment or eyeshadow haphazardly over the top.’ Sign.
