Yes, the Met Gala is all about the fashion, but that's not to say that the brightest stars in fashion, film, music and culture let their beauty game slip.
With the theme set as 'Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,' the event was the perfect excuse for A-listers to stray away from their usual tried-and-tested red carpet formula, testing out dramatic, catwalk-worthy hair and make-up trends.
Thanks to the futuristic dress code, metallics were big news, whether that meant a flash of foiled silver eyeshadow a la Kristen Stewart (whose newly peroxide hair and - shock horror - darker roots were styled to perfection), golden eyebrows (kudos to Lily Aldridge) or a flash of carefully coiffed silver hair a la Ciara.
The deep blackberry lip appeared at a clutch of AW16 shows earlier this year, and it seems that the trend has made the jump from catwalk to red carpet. Actresses Rachel McAdams and Hailee Steinfeld both sported a berry hue on their lips, worn with shimmering bronze eyeshadow for a more seasonal take on a traditionally autumnal trend. In a major departure from her typical 'red lip, classic' make-up look, Taylor Swift opted for a purple so deep it verged on black. Will '00s emo be a major influence for her followup to 1989? Only time will tell...
Complicated, heavily embellished dresses are best set off with simple, sleek updos: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Karlie Kloss both paired their white gowns with a slicked-back chignon, while a sporty high ponytail also proved an unexpected red carpet winner, worn by the likes of Kendall Jenner, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez and Hailee Baldwin.
