We all know that applying make-up on the tube requires a certain degree of skill (especially if you plan on attempting liquid eyeliner), but a new report comdemns make-up on-the-move as 'dangerous', saying there's a risk of cross-contamination, as well as of poking yourself in the eye.
As part of National Eye Health Week, Dr Susan Blakeney, clinical adviser to the College of Optometrists, issued a statement to say that we are risking damage to our corneas, as well as undisclosed infections due to 'poor hygiene'.
Now, admittedly the tube probably isn't quite as hygienic as your bedroom, but as long as you use a bit of common sense (avoid touching the poles in the tube carriage and apply your make-up with a sponge or brush rather than your fingertips), we think it's possible to do your face fairly hygienically. As for poking yourself in the eye with your mascara wand? Well, that can happen even when you're sitting tight at your dressing table.
So while we wouldn't advise making a habit of doing your make-up on the underground (apart from anything else, it's just hard to get your eyeliner even), in desperate times, we think there's nothing wrong with painting your face on the Piccadilly line.
