Lady Gaga is set to launch her very own beauty brand, Haus Laboratories, in September this year. Following in the (giant) steps of Rihanna, who has seenFenty become a sell-out success, Gaga is eschewing any of the more traditional retail spaces (Rihanna teamed up with Harvey Nichols on Fenty, for example) in favour of Amazon.
It will be the first major, high-profile beauty brand to launch on the e-commerce platform, and the products will launch in nine countries on three continents simultaneously. Speaking to Business of Fashion, Gaga explained why she had chosen to partner with Amazon on the launch: "There are companies that see me and what I stand for and the way that I view the world, and if it’s not perfectly in line with what they do ... they’ll be like, ‘Can you just change half of the equation?’ The answer is no. No deal. No message of self-acceptance, no deal. This [deal with Amazon] was so wonderful because this was like, ‘Let’s make a deal, let’s make a deal to change the world with their beauty.’”
Indeed, Haus Laboratories is an extension of Gaga's message of self-love and acceptance that she's been preaching since the very beginning of her career. Many brands are starting to capitalise on these ideas to sell their products, but Gaga is keen to point out that for her, it's just an authentic approach. “Look, you might want to look like the DuPont twins. You might want to look like Erin or Kitty [who appear in her brand video]... Or you might want to, oh my gosh, look like you. And that’s the nut that I really want to crack,” Gaga said to Business of Fashion. “I have a platform in the world. God gave me this voice for a reason, I don’t know why, I ask myself that question all the time, but I’m sure as hell not going to put out a beauty brand that is going to drive insecurity and fear into people. This is about liberation.”
While the promotional video (shot by Daniel Sannwald) itself is a giveaway that colour will be at the centre of this collection, the rest of the details remain unknown. But whether you're marking the launch date in your diaries or trying not to feel fatigued at the news of yet another celebrity-led brand launch, Gaga doesn't care. "The last thing the world needs is another beauty brand," says Gaga in the video. "But that's too bad."
