The likes of Ashley Graham, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Kate Bosworth all rely on Katie Jane Hughes to glow them up for the red carpet, and one look at this lady’s Instagram 462k follower strong Instagram page will tell you why – glossy skin is her forte. Here’s how to achieve it at home.
The Look
It was Katie’s first years in the beauty industry that first ingratiated her to the glowing skin effect. ‘When I was working as a make-up artist in London 12 years ago it was drilled into me that if you can’t do skin well you won’t go far in the fashion arena. There the make-up should look like it’s not there at all. I gravitate to glossy skin because it elevates anything else that surrounds it. A graphic black liner, for example, looks fresh and beautiful with a glossy eye. It adds an ‘I didn’t try hard today’ quality, even if what you pair it with is super precise. There’s an allure in glossy skin’.
The Steps
1. Cleanse: ‘It all starts with cleansing. I useREN’s Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic, £25, with a re-usable cotton round. I saturate the centre of the pad and start on the areas of my face where I want the most shine, for example, my cheeks.’
2. Serum: ‘Skincare plays the biggest part in getting glossy skin. You want to achieve that glow before you reach for make-up. Use a serum that has a glossy finish, steering clear of anything silicone based that can pill or dry out during the day. I like Summer Fridays’ CC Me Serum, £57. Placement is key. Press it into the highest points of your face to accentuate shine, avoiding naturally oilier areas like your T-zone.’

3. Moisturise: ‘Follow with a moisturiser that leaves a sheen on skin. I love Weleda’s Skin Food, £12.95. Bounce it into your skin with your hands, press it, don’t rub it. You don’t want to massage that luxe, glossy texture away.’
4. Coverage: ‘To make sure your glow lasts, be specific with your placement of coverage. Use a medium coverage foundation or light concealer. I apply the Makeup Forever Ultra HD Concealer, £20.50, with the Real Techniques Setting Brush, £7.99, for precision. Getting your product deep within the bristles of the brush makes for a lighter, more diffused finish when you apply.’
Katie’s Top Tip
‘Be precise with the application of your foundation and concealer. You don’t need it all over your face. Work from the centre outwards, and avoid going over the highest, glossiest points of your face. You can blend around them but don’t cover them. This the key to a lustrous, natural-looking complexion’.
