Grazia Beauty School: How Do I Do A Smoky Eye?

A bronze smoky eye is one of make-up’s true wonders. Why? It adds definition, it gives impact (without being OTT) to an otherwise natural look and, unlike its smudgy charcoal counterpart, it works for practically everyone. ‘I’m yet to meet a person who doesn’t suit a bronze smoky eye,’ says make-up artist Hannah Martin. ‘there’s something about gold, bronze and copper that flatters all eye and skin tones, and makes for the most mesmerising look when paired with dark brown or smudgy black liner.’

As for the rest of your look: ‘Brows should match the intensity of your eye, so if you’ve gone all out then make your brows a little stronger than usual.’ Lashings of smudge-proof mascara will bring everything together. So how can you do it yourself?

Step 1. Prep

For longevity, a smoother finish and to achieve a truer colour, dab eyeshadow primer across your eyelid. Use your fingertip to control the amount of product you apply (a little often goes a long way)

Step 2. Scribble

For foolproof application and speed, look for scribble sticks over powders and loose pigments. Apply in a windscreen motion over lids (no need to be neat), stopping just before the eye crease. Next, quickly blend out the formula before it dries for an even wash of colour. Optional: pack powder over the top to amp up the intensity for evenings.

Step 3. Fill and Finish

Add definition with a slick of eyeliner hugging the lash line (choose kohl formulas for a softer – and more foolproof – finish) and several coats of sooty-black mascara. Optional: add a pop of highlighter at the inner corners of the eyes and just under the brow bone.
