Spotted on Gigi Hadid and Yara Shahidi, colourful eyeliner is making a bold and somewhat unexpected comeback. The key to keeping it fresh? Application and placement. Whereas the ‘80s saw heavy, smudged liner sketched below the waterline, now, it’s all about focusing your attention on the inner and outer corners of the eye.
Take Gigi’s latest make-up moment, for instance. Legendary make-up artist Patrick Ta applied neon orange liner in a ‘V’ shape to the inner corners of her eyes. The results? A dramatic flash of colour that makes Gigi’s blue eyes pop. To keep it modern, Ta finished the look with a soft taupe shadow swept across the eyelids and brushed-up, fluffy brows.
For make-up artist (and lover of colourful liner) Katie Jane-Hughes, the trick to nailing this trend is to keep the rest of your make-up simple and soft. ‘This will allow for the eye make-up to look cooler and fresher naturally,’ she says. Case in point: Yara Shahidi’s white feline flicks (below) that perfectly offset her golden eyeshadow and glowing skin.
