The 10 Best Highlighters And How To Apply Them

Get your daily dose of radiance with these mega-watt highlighters

Social media saw a 904% increase in the hashtag #glow last year alone. And what better way to achieve said glow than a shimmering smattering of highlighter? Whether you prefer matte or sparkly, liquid or powder, a sweep of highlighter atop cheekbones has the instant ability to add radiance to your complexion. But, application isn’t easy and can be daunting to even the most makeup savvy among us. There is a fine line between a subtle shimmer to a supercharged strobe…and both can work, you just need to have the right products and tools to achieve the desired glow. We've narrowed down the 10 best highlighters and spoken to Bobbi Brown PRO Artist Amy Conway to reveal her intel on how to apply them…

Where should you apply highlighter?

‘The golden rule for application is to apply highlighter on the highest points of the face, so the cheekbones, brow bone, and down the bridge of the nose’, explains Amy Conway, ‘basically, wherever the light would naturally hit your face.’

What formulas should you go for?

‘It depends on your skin type, but as a general rule – normal to oily skins should opt for powder highlighters that are long-wearing, whilst those with dry skin should go for something creamy that will give you a glass-like finish.’

The Best Liquid Highlighters

When it comes to achieving a natural dewy glow, look no further than liquid highlighter. Just dab straight on, blend with fingertips and voila! Polished, handsomely healthy skin. Our favourite picks? Charlotte Tilbury's Hollywood Flawless Filter, £30 is a godsend for lacklustre skin. The creamy formula glides on and reflects the light for a natural, luminous glow. Apply as a primer, beneath foundation. Or mix it with your foundation to amplify that glow. Or, better yet, dab atop cheekbones, down the bridge of the nose and along the cupid's bow for real radiance. If you prefer a golden glow, try Marc Jacobs Coconut Dew Highlighter, £32. Blended with five coconut actives and provitamin B5, this creamy gel highlighter hydrates and refreshes whilst lending skin a golden gleam. A win win. Oh, and it smells sensational!

The Best Cream Highlighters

If you want to avoid a supercharged strobe, and prefer a subtle sheen, opt for a cream highlighter. Easy to blend, you can build the product up to achieve your desired glow. We love Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate, £60, as it's completely sheer and sparkle-free, acting like a gloss for the skin. Apply on top of foundation and steer clear from heavy powders to keep the look lovely and dewy. Plus, you can dab it on lips and eyes for an all over sheen. A favourite amongst beauty editors, RMS Living Luminizer Highlighter, £36, is incredibly lightweight so blends like a dream and doesn't feel sticky or greasy on touch. So much so, you can even layer this over powder products without any patches. It's the perfect pick-me-up for dull tired skin! For super shine try Beauty Pie Triple Beauty Liquid Luminizer, £20 - this little pot of joy may be small in size but boy is it mighty in shine. Dot the velvety cream onto high points and blend in with fingertips. Keep layering to build it up from subtle shimmer to whoa glow! Oh, and try Amy's top tip – 'highlight can double up as an eyeshadow, so keep it in your handbag for a 'coffee to cocktails' moment and press onto eyelids.'

The Best Powder Highlighters

Powder highlighters belong in every girls makeup bag. Whether you have dry or oily skin, a powder highlighter can be used atop liquid or cream to really extenuate the glow and set the look. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder, £42 is seriously good. With ultra-fine pearl particles, this powder diffuses the light so any imperfections are basically invisible. Top trick? 'For days when we need a lift – use your powder highlighter to set under-eye concealer. The powder will stop it creasing and keep eyes bright and lifted,' recommends Bobbi Brown PRO artist Amy Conway. For a festive sparkle, try Bobbi Brown's Highlight & Glow Highlighting Powder Duo, £49.50, This glitzy gold palette houses two best-selling highlighters. Opal Glow is a pretty rose pink with pearl pigments whilst Bare Glow is a bronzy shimmer. Try layering Opal over Bare for a high impact mega-watt glow. And take Amy Conway's advice – 'always think of highlighter as your finishing touch, apply at the end of your makeup routine to lift the entire look.' 'To get a really dewy glow use a small fluffy brush and spritz it with setting spray before applying your chosen highlighter,' suggests Amy. Try Givenchy's Mystic Glow Powder, £34.50 which can be used wet as well as dry for a super high-impact shine.

The Best Pen/Stick Highlighters

For seamless application try a highlighter in a nifty pen or stick formula. This way, you can draw the highlighter precisely where you want it and just blend in with a brush. Nars The Multiple in Copacabana, £29 , is a handy highlighting stick that can be used on lips, cheeks, eyes and body. Yes, even body! Simply swipe on the cream-to-powder formula and blend in. The result? A sheer natural shimmer that screams 'healthy happy skin'. Chanel Eclat Lumiere Highlighter Face Pen, £28, isn't just your bog-standard makeup pen, it's Chanel's colour-correcting, glow-giving, travel-friendly highlighting face pen! So easy to use - just twist, dab on and blend in with fingertips. Perfect for touch-ups on the go.

The Best Highlighter Palettes

Get pretty bang for buck with a highlighter palette that houses more than one shade, so you can layer and blend to your hearts content! Fenty recently dropped the amazing Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Palette, £42, with 7 bright and vibrant shimmering shades. Try layering Subzero with Scandal'ice for a pretty lilac-blue sparkle, perfect for the party season. Or go for Mac's best-selling Hyper Real Glow Palette, £35, which packs three pink hues of highlighter in one nifty palette. So creamy and soft, sweep on with a brush atop cheekbones and brow bone and forgo blush and eyeshadow. Easy!
