Don't judge a book by its cover, so goes the old adage. But what if that book is actually an eye shadow palette, and what if the cover is Chanel? In that case, I dare you to resist any of the brand's products, so delicious is the packaging. Don't think this is style over substance, though – from Chanel No. 5 to Rouge Allure via Le Vernis nail colours, Chanel's beauty products really work, doing exactly what you want them to.
What could be more exciting, then, than the arrival of a brand new Chanel perfume? Well, steel yourselves, as today sees the launch of the brand new iteration of the fashion house's Gabrielle scent: Gabrielle Essence, with a campaign fronted by Margot Robbie. The 'fragrance of an imaginary flower', this is more intense than the original Gabrielle perfume, with a mix of red berry, sandalwood, white musk and vanilla. It is, in fact, exactly the sort of perfume you might be looking for as summer dissolves into autumn. There's also a brand new hair mist and a 'Twist and Spray', which allows you take your perfume with you on-the-go.

These are but three of many lovely products that Chanel has developed for the new season, most of which are focused on the iconic monochrome colour scheme that is so synonymous with the brand. 'Women think of all colours except the absence of colour,' said Coco Chanel herself. 'I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.'
Speaking of harmony, the products themselves are a real treat. From black or white Le Vernis nail colours to choose from to two new eyeshadow palettes, the collection feels as luxurious and wearable as ever. It's also modelled expertly by Chanel girl Kristen Stewart, who returns as the face of the brand's AW19 beauty collection.
Perhaps most excitingly of all is the new Le Gel Pailleté, which is essentially a souped-up version of that body glitter you couldn't stop wearing in the 90s (just me?). 'There is an idea of extreme fantasy as well as reality in this collection, of something very stylized or delineated while embracing the day-to-day,' said Lucia Pica, Chanel's global creative make-up and colour designer. 'There is a certain palpability to the texture; it is so real it becomes part of your skin. At the same time the sparkle hovers above it, becoming almost like an aura, a kind of glamour seen in films.'
Basically, Le Gel might just be the best highlighter you've ever used. Whether you dab it on to the high points of your face or apply liberally all over your face and décolletage, it will catch the light in all the right ways.
Other highlights (sorry) include the white eyeshadow top coat with silver sparkles (already sold out on the Chanel website but available here) and the Rouge Allure Velvet Extrême in deep burgundy (yum). Of course, as well as the seasonal collections, Chanel's age-old favourites are still available. As we go into the colder months, one of the best bronzers on the market is Soleil Tan de Chanel, which is a cream bronzer that you can use either as a base for make-up or more like a traditional, powdery bronzer.
Other things to look out for? Chanel is launching a new fragrance next week (a riff on its lovely Chanel Gabrielle scent), so keep your eyes peeled for that...
