1/ Always wear waterproof mascara

The moment that Lauren Conrad sheds a single tear while arguing with Audrina Patridge is up there as one of the most iconic scenes in reality TV history. While her deep black mascara made for a great TV moment, it also taught us that waterproof mascara is key.

2/ Straighteners can double as a clothing iron

A hack that we have relied on many a time is Lauren Conrad’s genius hair iron hack. Early on in The Hills, we see LC rushing around for her interview with Teen Vogue. Not having time to iron her outfit, she opts for straighteners instead. Simple but seriously effective.

3/ …But beware that curling tongs burn

While hair straighteners might make a great on-the-go iron, hair tools and clothes generally don’t mix. On a fateful trip to Paris, LC and Whitney encounter a dress drama when Lauren’s gown is burnt by a nearby curling tong. Word to the wise: always turn off your hair tools and never hang anything nearby.

4/ Boho hair scarfs are a thing

The Hills girls are no stranger to accessories. Adding to the noughties boho vibe, Lauren, Whitney, Stephanie, Audrina and Lo are all seen at one time or another using a scarf as a hair accessory. Not going to lie… we’re still kind of into it.

5/ The easiest way to look professional? Add a headband

If there’s one accessory that can elevate your look in The Hills’ early years: it’s a headband. Lauren was the biggest fan of a hairband, but Whitney, Lo, Heidi and Audrina all followed suit at one point or another.

7/ Beachy waves will never go out of style

If there’s one hairstyle that encapsulates The Hills’ southern California style, it’s the beachy wave. Loose, undone, relaxed and chic – we’re still as into the style as we were 15 years ago.

8/ Want to stand out from the crowd? Coloured eyeliner is where it’s at

When Stephanie Pratt first came to our screens, she wanted to stand out as more than just ‘Spencer’s sister.’ Steph’s make-up quickly became iconic in its own right – notably her love of blue eyeliner. While coloured liner has very much come back around, Stephanie’s go to was to under-line her eyes with a metallic frosted blue and add lashings of black mascara. It’s a… noughties vibe.
