The Weird Way Your Shoulder Bag Is Damaging Your Hair

Eeek - it turns out the way we carry our bags on our shoulders is causing our hair to thin.

Writer Lisa DeSantis has written a piece about this very subject after going for a hair cut and discovering that the hairdresser could guess which shoulder she carried her bag on - because that side was thinner. Her hairdresser said that having your hair caught in the straps of your handbag can pull out your hair and cause damage to the cuticle. It’s even worse if your bag is embellished, has a metal chain strap or metal clasps because it gives your hair even more chance of becoming ripped out. Those of you with dyed hair or those of you who use a lot of heat on your precious locks need to be extra careful because those things have already weakened your hair so your hair is even more likely to break or be pulled out.

Obviously the easiest way to prevent this is to simply be a bit conscious of making sure your hair is out of the way when you put your bag on your shoulder - or avoid bags with clasps and embellishments on the strap when you're wearing your hair down.

Other causes of thinning hair include physical and emotional stress, a lack of vitamin A or B, a lack of protein, anemia, anabolic steroids, overstyling, a change in hormones, antidepressants and blood thinners. If you have any question about your hair health consult your hairdresser because they’re basically a GP for your luscious locks.
