The red carpets are so often dominated by up-dos, but rare is it to find a style one can easily and quickly copy at home. However, Saoirse Ronan has given the old-faithful top-knot a new and effortlessly easy to recreate twist.
While attending the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where the Ladybird actress picked up an award for her role in the Oscar-tipped film, Ronan made a powerful case for the off-the-face hairstyle. Evidently, she was taking cues from the catwalk where models at Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Versace and Simone Rocha put forward the motion for high-octane accessories. Pearl-embellished hair slides, bejewelled headbands, sparkling barrettes and glimmering clasps were spotted on models across a spectrum of spring/summer 2018 shows. What the artistic statement earring was to last year, the unapologetic hair accessory is to this.
In keeping, Ronan teamed her Chanel jumpsuit with a 18K gold plate comb designed by her hairstylist Adir Abergel in collaboration with luxury accessory makers Lelet NY. This hand-made £388 adornment is also a favourite of Jessica Biel, Marion Cotillard, Kristen Stewart and Vanessa Kirby too. From its pronged comb falls a cascade of chains and pearl-sized metal balls. The effect of this decorative add-on introduces an element of excitement to the hairstyle we so often rely on post-working out.
Frankly, it’s refreshing to see an interesting and non-conformist take on a traditional bun. And, considering Saoirse Ronan’s recent red carpet outings it comes as no surprise that she’s the one to deliver it.
The key to mastering this sartorial accent is to pick an accessory with a little razzle-dazzle. Placement doesn't need to be perfect. While a barrette may offer a practical measure, this ornament is about being extra, so remember the mantra 'fashion over function' next time you find yourself with hair slide in hand.
