Roots have made quite the comeback recently with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow embracing her natural grey hair at the Golden Globes. And why not? If you don’t want to cover your natural colour or continuously touch up your roots – you shouldn’t have to. But, if you are a little OCD about your root growth and prefer to conceal them – we’ve got some at-home tips from Adam Reed, professional Hair Stylist and UK Editorial Ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel.
First things first, opt for temporary rather than permanent colour kits. ‘Keep it temporary whilst you’re stuck inside,’ advises Reed, ‘try a root touch up spray like L’Oréal Professionnel Hair Touch Up, £9.99.’ Next, apply it sparingly. ‘Spray it only on the areas that are on show, holding the nozzle about 10cm away from the roots, spraying backwards and forwards, painting the colour onto the areas that need a little help.’ Top trick? ‘Be as gentle as possible to get a soft colour blend.’
When it comes to choosing the right shade, Reed suggests going lighter than your natural hair colour. ‘Build the colour up so it doesn’t look too heavy – think of it in the same way as building up mascara on your lashes.’
So, whether it’s grey hairs you want to cover, or roots that give the game away, we’ve got you covered with our round-up of the best at-home solutions:
