If there was one beauty shocker on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, it was Jennifer Aniston with a bun. Yes, dear reader, you read that right. Jennifer, who's normally famed for wearing her glossy locks down in all their shiny glory, went for a sleek and sophisticated updo when she stepped out on the red carpet.

We spoke to the man responsible for the style, Chris McMillan (who also happens to be Jennifer's long-time stylist and friend, as well as her business partner in Living Proof, their co-owned haircare brand. Phew!) about how he created her look...

Grazia Daily: Tell us one thing we couldn’t guess about Jennifer Aniston’s hair?

Chris McMillan: That it wasn’t washed for two days before the Globes!

GD: What’s your favourite look to do on Jen?

CM: I like to style it either pulled back or with a 70s-style blowout.

GD: Jen’s famous for her smooth, glossy locks – what tips do you have to help us get that silky shine?

CM: It’s really important to make sure you’re taking care of your hair! And a little styling tip is when you’re blow drying, use tension.

**GD: How did you create her style for the Golden Globes and was there any inspiration?

**

CM: The look we decided on for the Golden Globes was overall clean, simple and elegant. Jen was deciding between two dresses – if she wore one dress, her hair would have been down, but she ended up choosing the dress that would look best with her hair up. Originally, we were going to do a pony tail, but during make up, we put her hair in a bun and we both decided it looked great!

GD: What are some insider tips so we can get the look at home?

CM: Jen had two day old hair, which works perfectly for buns! I used Living Proof Instant Texture Mist (£22.00) before, during and after to pull her hair back in a deep side part. I used a bungee cord ponytail holder and a long Goody bobby pin to hold the bun in place. I also used Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray (£21.00) to finish the look.

GD: What’s a style you’d love to see Jen try?

CM: A bun – and we accomplished that tonight for the Globes!

GD: No one wants to spend hours at the dressing table – how can we speed up our blow drying time and still have a great style?

CM: Let your hair air dry 65% of the way, then blow out the remainder.

GD: What’s a great work-to-play style we can do at our desks?

CM: I love a good ponytail.

GD: What are your desert island must-have products?

CM: I don’t know if I can choose! I love all of the Living Proof shampoos and conditioners because they keep the hair healthy. As for styling products, it really depends! Tonight I used Instant Texture Mist (£22.00) on Jen, and Living Proof Style Lab Straight Styling Spray (£21.00) on Juliana Margulies. I finished them both off with Flex Shaping Hairspray (£21.00).

GD: Red carpet hair is often criticised for looking dated – how do you keep things fresh and modern?

CM: It all really depends on the client! No one should feel uncomfortable. I like to do hair that’s more simple and natural.
