‘The relationship with my hair, I would say it’s been like a roller coaster. Growing up everything around me was straight hair, my dollies, my Barbies. I just believed that was the norm. I never ever disliked my hair, but I just thought that that was the beauty standard. As a Black woman, cutting your hair off can be a very big thing but I just wanted to feel free. And since I’ve done my big chop, I’ve built a better relationship with my hair. I’ve embraced it a lot more.’

Dawn’s Advice: Keep things in their natural form but play around and enhance what you have.

‘My hair journey has changed over the last couple of years, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease ten years ago. My hair is my weapon, when it’s down I feel strong, it’s like my lion’s mane. It makes me want to roar at the illness. I’m grateful for good hair, good genes and that no matter how bad my day is my hair always looks good.’

Laura’s Advice: Keep trying, re-invent yourself, use all the products out there to feel the best you can, and live life – enjoy it!

‘In the beginning I was made to feel ashamed of my hair, to push it down. I remember comments from being really, really young – things like you know, no one’s going to marry your daughter she’s dark skinned and she has rough hair. I remember having big bouncy long hair and loving it. Just before Covid I actually cut my hair off completely and bleached it blonde. And from there I grew it naturally. And the more I grew it, the more I actually identified with who I was. For me beauty is when someone is their authentic self.’

Dolly’s Advice: You don’t need to change and battle against your natural hair, accept it for what it is and be proud.
