The Humble Ponytail Is THE Easiest Way To Elevate Your Hair Style At Home

Here's how it's done, according to one expert

Thought the humble ponytail was nothing but a lazy weekend up-do? Think again. The simple style has been taken to new heights thanks to the likes of J-Lo, Kim Kardashian as well as Hailey Bieber (oh and obviously the most iconic of all ponytail-wears, Ariana Grande). They were also big news at the A/W’20 shows where high-set, polished ponies swung down the Mimi Wade runway and low elegant styles turned heads at Elie Saab. Simple yet stylish, a ponytail is such an easy (and low maintenance) win if you want to elevate your hair 'do while working from home.

‘It’s an iconic trend that suits everyone,’ says hair stylist Adam Reed. Top tricks? ‘Prep with a volumising product pre-blow-dry to create texture in the hair for a fuller finish. Next, tong sections of the hair to add volume and a slight kick. Finish with a volumising spray and secure with a piece of elastic (not a tie), as the tighter you tie the ponytail the more volume you’ll get as you’re pushing the hair outwards.’ Time to pony up...

How To Do A Sky-High Ponytail

Suit Your Face Shape

‘Heart-shaped faces should start with a side sweep to help conceal a wide forehead,’ says Reed, ‘whereas slightly square-shaped faces should opt for a centre-parting with pieces left hanging loose to soften the edges.’ And if your face is oval-shaped, you can just about pull off anything, apparently.

Add More Hair

If your ponytail looks more fine than full, get extra oomph with the help of extensions. Try Hershesons Invisible Ponytail, £90, which clips on to the base of your own ponytail for a natural-looking finish.

Slick It Down

After a super-sleek pony? It’s all in the products – ‘Prep the hair with an oil for a really nice silky shine, then use the Percy & Reed Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mousse, £12.50, while blow-drying to hold the hair in place without leaving it sticky or hard,’ says Reed.
