There’s something about the beginning of a new year that makes us want to overhaul our look. It’s a wake-up call that our wardrobe is lost in last season’s trends and that our beauty regime hasn’t moved on since the start of Uni. Rather than ringing up a mega credit card bill in Topshop and dialling the salon and demanding an appointment, consider rediscovering your flat irons. Supernaturally straight hair is the answer.
After seasons of tousled Cali-girl waves stalking the catwalk, flat ironed hair is making a comeback. Daniela Kocianova’s blunt, centre-parted bob in the new Céline campaign taps into this aesthetic. The look is part Versace model, part Posh Spice and heavily reliant on heated tongs.
Neapolitan street style star, designer, stylist and fashion consultant Gilda Ambrosio has championed this look for years. And, secretly, between you and me, Gilda is likely the inspiration for Kim Kardashian’s bottom-grazing sleek hair. Kylie Jenner – probably courtesy of a remarkably authentic wig – has also been modelling the look in platinum blonde.
To get the swish of poker-straight locks, it requires committing to the full power of styling products. GHD's UK ambassador Zoe Irwin advises starting by prepping damp hair with a thermal protecting spray and then locking the product in with a paddle brush blow-dry. Then, using the tail end of a comb create a centre parting and glide the straighteners over sections of your hair. Finish with a spritz of spray to reduce flyaways and then lead your best-streamlined life.
