Don’t be the dick with a bindi

5 Festival Make-Up Ideas That Won’t Offend Anyone

Of course, everyone can see the apparent beauty of a bindi or a Native American headdress, but that doesn’t make it acceptable to wear one. Festivals and Halloween are a chance to dress up, experiment with your make-up and let your creative side loose. That said, it should be done without stepping on anyone’s traditions, customs or religion.

This festival season, stay smart, inspired and aware that unicorns are A-Ok for inspiration, but war paint and Day Of The Dead skull make-up are not. We suggest focusing all your artistry efforts on your eyes as dance parties are sweltering affairs that don’t mix well with foundation. Here’s the best, and least-offensive, festival make-up ideas that Pinterest has to offer…

1. Spark Up

Plug into the sequin grid with glistening cheeks. Using either a dot of eyelash glue or a smattering of vaseline, carefully dab on sequins.Having your cheekbone as a canvas ensures that you don’t get stray sparkles in your eye. Add a swish of highlighter to light up the night.

2. Find The Glitter Lining

With the sweep of a glitter eyeliner, you can without fuss transform your eyebrows. Recommendation: find a liner that matches your eye colour to make them pop.

3. Day-Glo

Dress for a rave with glowsticks-bright eyeshadows in vivid colours. The beauty of this looks is that Barry M has your back when it comes to bargain-priced shades. Plus, as long as your eyeliner is straight and you go hard on the pigment it matters less how exact you are with the colour placement. The trick to getting this right is picking an under-eye liner that makes your pupils stand out and chasing powder, not cream shadows.

4. Colour Wash

Ask yourself this: if not now, when? Festivals allow you to bring out your wild side, so let it loose with a bold pigment eye. Follow the Drag Queen rule-book and smooth down your eyebrows with non-toxic cosmetics glue and then brush them flat. Once your brows are tamed, go heavy with the primer and then add several coatings of pigment-rich powder shadow. Skip the liner and just comb and curl your lashes.

5. And, If You Don’t Like Glitter

There are no two ways about it, glitter is a nightmare to get off. Especially at a festival. You’ll need a strong toner and a good deal of patience to ensure you get every last sparkly crumb. So, if that late-night activity doesn’t appeal to you, get crafty with a black eyeliner and some negative space. We suggest having a shape and proportions in mind before you start drawing. Follow the rubric above if you’re keen to incorporate a wing into your graphic liner shape.
