Back in the day, if you wanted to make an announcement about something, there were set ways to go about it. An engagement? A few lines of text in The Times will do. And if you were famous, and needed to communicate something your fans, get your publicist to make a statement. Nowadays, a quick snap on Instagram is all that's needed to tell the world about your engagement, or birthday - or breakfast, for that matter.
