Back in the day, if you wanted to make an announcement about something, there were set ways to go about it. An engagement? A few lines of text in The Times will do. A member of the royal family was coming to town? Ask your local town crier to spread the word. And if you were famous, and needed to communicate something your fans, get your publicist to make a statement. Nowadays, a quick snap on Instagram is all that's needed to tell the world about your engagement, or birthday - or breakfast, for that matter.

Among all the #InspiringQuotes and pictures of avocados on toast, we've noticed a trend among the A-List. Namely, that all the drastic chops our favourite stars are currently braving are all announced via a selfie, rather than waiting for the paparazzi to pick it up. This could be because it gives them a little control over how it's first seen and presented (plus, your hair never looks better than when you leave the hairdresser) or it could because Instagram is the ONLY way to let your fans know what's been happening.

Kate Hudson, Selena Gomez and Emily Ratajkowski have all gone for a bob recently, and debuted the 'do via the social media site, either on their page or that of their stylist. With captions ranging from mini-essays on how they love their new styles, to the highest form of communication (emojis), it seems the Instagram announcement is here to stay. Click through the gallery to see who else has been using selfie announcements to tell the world about their new, shorter tresses.
