Should I buy… Bliss’ Smurf Coloured Home Mask Kit?

Picture this, I’ve just got home, it’s just gone midnight, and my deadline for this story is a mere few hours away. So, like any responsible beauty journalist, I put Bliss’s Mask A-‘Peel’ (£20) at-home facial kit to the test right then and there.

The product promises to purge my pores and transform my lustre-lacking skin. As with most beauty products, the ingredient list reads like a science experiment littered with unpronounceable words like, ‘Diatomaceous Earth’, ‘Tetrasodium Pyrophosphate’ and ‘Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde’. But don't let that put you off. The package promises that its core components are Vitamin C, Bilberry and Seaweed Extract – three elements that together will make me look youthful and revitalised. In other words, if it works, I'll go to bed with glowy skin.

When you open the box you’ll find a spatula and three small pots, not dissimilar in shape, size and packaging from a Total Greek yoghurt tub. As soon as you peeled back the foil and the gummy bear blue powder is revealed a chemical smell hits you. Next step is adding cold water to create a paste, which you then smooth (with difficulty) across your face.

This gluey mixture is icy cold on the skin and emits a slight tingling feeling. After spending 10 minutes wandering around my flat in the midnight hours looking like Smurfette, the mask begins to harden and naturally pull away from the skin. At the 15 minute mark, the fun and games begin as you can peel back the now-hardened paste and reveal your newly Blissed out skin.

The verdict? While my complexion did look markedly clearer when I woke up in the morning, it did feel like the mask’s main benefit was removing all my icky dead and dull skin. And, of course, allowing me to pretend to be a smurf for a bit.
