Should I Buy… The Barry M Chisel Cheeks Contour Creams If I’m A Contouring Virgin?

If you're scared by the complexity of contouring kits then this one looks hella simple. But can even a contouring moron (hello) use it?

Should I Buy... The Barry M Chisel Cheeks Contour Creams If I'm A Contouring Virgin?

Hands up if you've never tried contouring before but you'd really like to but the only thing is youdon't know how and if you're honest you're scared it's probably too late to ask.

Hello, that's me.

Contouring kits look very scary. They're full of mystical colours, creams, powders and brushes that supposedly come together to make your face look like a Kardashian. To me though, they might as well be an advanced introduction to the sport of curling for all the sense it makes to me.

SO, when Barry M who seem nice and friendly as a make-up brand, released their Chisel Cheeks Contour Creams kit (£7.99) which looks so simple even a child could use it (not that they should, obvs), I was intrigued.

Basically, it consists of two chubby sticks. One dark brown one for contouring and one beige highlighting one.

There's a picture on the back of the box that shows where you're meant to put the make-up on your face but, being a total novice, I was going to need a little bit more help.

Luckily, there's a nice video on their website that shows a nice man called Adam using the product on a nice lady and it doesn't look scary at all.

So simple right? Couple of lines, bit of blending and I too will be a Kardashian.

Let's see.

OK. First up, we whack the brown stick on (FYI Barry M says this kit is specially designed to be suitable for all skin tones, I obvs can only speak for my skin tone and say it seemed to match mine, I can't comment on anyone else). I used a brush because Adam did and because it is so creamy (it's like yoghurt in a stick which sounds super gross I know) it blends with a normal blusher brush. Just draw on the stripes and swoosh the brush up and down back and forth until you no longer look like you've had a fight with the worst kids' face painter at the county fair.

Then, I did the highlighter in the same way as I did the contour stick. Remember to give the brush a little bit of a clean because you don't want your contouring make-up where your highlighter make-up should be because oh God what would everyone SAY?

This was the result

I mean there's definitely cheekboneage there that wasn't there before so I'm into the contour stick. 10/10 would use again. As for the highlighter, I feel like it could go harder, it seems kinda tame compared to other highlighters I've used. But then, if you're not into a heavy look for during the day, it might just be the ticket for you.

There's a few other options for this kind of kit too...

Maybelline Master Contour, £6.98

W7 Face Shaping Contour Stix, £3.45

NYX Wonder Stick, £11.18

Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Curvy Contour, £33.49

Smashbox Cosmetics Step-By-Step Contour Stick Trio, £31.50

So, if you are looking for a contour kit that isn't scary, I'd say, this concept is a good place to start. We can deal with all the palette crap later.
