Classic or kooky, utility or uber-impractical, retro or futuristic, pretty or pretty tough – there was just about every kind of handbag on offer throughout the month-long autumn/winter 2015 showcase.
With the seventies still headlining many a runway it was no surprise to see both buckets and saddles dominating the landscape in autumnal hues and tan suede. Burberry Prorsum added leopard printed ponyskin into the mix (in fact, animal prints were big news all round) whilst Altuzarra debuted handbags in deep burgundy with satisfyingly swishy tassles. Heritage monogramming was once again celebrated at Gucci – perfect for nailing autumn’s nerdy-cool.
Ladylike handbags were available in every colour to suit your mood – and prints joined the more grown up gang, too. Prada’s molecular motifs gave sophisticated top-handle styles a sci-fi spin, Michael Kors flourished doctors’ bags with feathers and Dior’s chain-strap beauties arrived in the most electrifiying colours shot through with stripes and graphic blocks.
If you’ve not yet tired of novel arm candy then head to House of Holland for slogo’d backpacks and totes or Moschino for Jeremy Scott’s teddybear bonanza – the girls at this show carried three bags full. Pop-tastic lego brights and geometric shapes have the burgeoning 1980s trend wrapped up in one far easier package than a lurex dress over velvet leggings. Adding a fun touch to less outré accessories was the presence of plastic chains – Calvin Klein, Miu Miu and Balenciaga all dipped into this micro trend.
