What does Barbie mean to you? Maybe she’s the one doll you really, really wanted each and every birthday when you were younger. Or perhaps, your first style icon. Or, for the very naughty ones among us, the much loved toy you always pinched from your older sister.
Whatever Barbie was to you, she’s always stood for inspiration and education (who else was a scientist, an astronaut and a teacher?) – and today, she continues to encompasses those diverse qualities .
And this year Barbie has a new look – or should we say, new looks! Twenty-three new dolls, including eight different skin tones, fourteen new face shapes, eighteen eye colours AND twenty-two new hairstyles and fashions are all joining Barbie’s new crew.
Also joining Barbie’s crew is Grace Ladoja, an up and coming British film maker who brought together a group of her closest girl friends for a short film talking about society, style and what it means to be a woman, inspired by Barbie Fashionista.
Plus, Barbie’s new articulated ankles means she can wear flat shoes for the first time, in her 56 year history which opens up a whole new wardrobe of gamine, chic ensembles for Barbie Fashionista.
Barbie’s creator, Ruth Handler, had a vision for a doll that was more than just a pretty face, which in 1959, was pretty controversial. Ruth said of her creation “My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.”
With her endless fashions and countless careers to choose from, Barbie is the ultimate adventurer, always experiencing life to the fullest. Barbie Fashionista now has even more of those choices so dear to Ruth’s heart – the only question is, which one will you choose?
