Coolchella Vs. Clichélla: How The Crowds Divided At Coachella

Coolchella Vs. Clichélla: How The Crowds Divided

cool vs cliche hero

We’re not saying boho is dead, but it’s been subject to quite the beating at last week’s Coachella festival. In a frisson of fringing, a swathe of tan suede, an onslaught of crochet, an outbreak of transfer tats and a plague of plaits the fashion world feels like it’s been whacked around the garlanded head with one of kaftan-swooshing Paris Hilton’s many hefty festival handbags. We don’t know what she’s carrying, but totes are totes not appropriate for chilling stage-side. The coolest Coachella goers did well to avoid the now well-established clichéd codes this time of year brings. Here’s how the crowds divided…

COOLCHELLAS:

These are the girls who did one of the following three things.

1.) Dressed how they usually dress: see Alexa in jeans and a preppy knotted knit.

** 2.)** Maxed out on fancy-dress-up but with a knowing wink: check out Mia Moretti and co. in cutesy 1950s style co-ords or Rihanna flying in the face of the norm via a lilac furry coat, matchy lipstick and work-boots.

Or 3.) channelled the usual Woodstock vibes but carefully, without excessive accoutrements: note Kate Bosworth or Rosie Huntington Whiteley’s pared back styling.

CLICHÉLLAS: It’s not that boho isn’t pretty – it is – but has peak hippy been reached? Thanks to a barrage of broderie anglaise crop tops, sawn off denim shorts, fringed bags (we don’t know how Alessandra Ambrosio’s girl gang didn’t get in tangle) and more friendship bracelets than any regular person would have time to put on, ever, the ‘70s phenomenon feels like it’s fading into majorly ubiquitous territory…
