Get excited people! After weeks of rumours, Madonna has confirmed on Instagram that she’s going to be playing the BRIT Awards on February 25th, giving her the perfect excuse to use the, frankly genius, hashtag #BritsImMadonna
This will be her first performance at the Awards show for 20 years, meaning that last time she took to the BRITs stage Kendall Jenner wasn’t even born. You just think about that for a second.
Brit Awards chairman Max Lousada said: “She's an icon, an innovator and, above all, an entertainer. Having her as part of the show will guarantee an unforgettable night of music.”
Madonna is expected to perform her new single Living For Love, probably will wearing some kind of leotard and perhaps wrap herself in ropes* a la* this teaser which she posted on Instagram:
In preparation for her comeback, let’s revisit some of her best ever Award show moments….
'Like A Virgin' - MTV Video Music Awards 1984
Madonna's award shows performances were controversial from the off, with her first ever big performance at the very first VMAs causing quite the stir. In the early eighties, Madonna rolling round dressed as a slutty bride was considered pretty taboo-busting. These days Miley Cyrus fellates a hammer naked and we barely flinch.
'Vogue' - MTV Video Music Awards 1990
One of Madge's most iconic perfomances saw her dress up as Marie Antoinette in a huge production number which would foreshadow the high drama of her subsequent tours.
'Sooner Or Later' - Academy Awards 1991
Just a year later Madonna was back on stage to perform her Oscar nominated ballad Sooner or Later. Her relatively paired-back performance was low on gimmicks but proved that she could hold her own vocally. However, the night didn't pass without a publicity stunt - her date to the awards was Michael Jackson.
'Bedtime Story' - Brit Awards 1995
Madonna's first, and to date only, BRITs performance was of the Bjork-penned Bedtime Story. Sometimes all you need is an industrial scale fan and a weave that would put Beyonce's wig room to shame.
'Like A Virgin'/'Hollywood' - MTV Video Music Awards 2004
Rather than competing with young pretenders Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, Madge enlisted them to collaborate on one of the most jaw-dropping performances in award show history. Justin Timberlake's shocked reaction is priceless.
