For Spring Summer 2015 designers looked to the 70s for inspiration
Even if you have only a passing interest in fashion, you wont have failed to miss that the 1970s are back a big way. This season we’ve got high boots and midi skirts, suede jackets and patchwork denim – all familiar leitmotifs of the free love decade. But it’s next season that we really go down the 1970s rabbit hole with Abba/Austin Powers/ Halloween costume levels of colour saturation and print seen on the catwalks for Spring/Summer 2015.
Suede coats and patchwork jackets brought a 70s vibe to the runway at L-R: Derek Lam, Saint Laurent, Gucci
At Chanel we had psychedelic water colour prints in every colour of the rainbow and silk blouses cut with Saturday Night Fever collars. Over at Saint Laurent there were coloured furs and patchwork suede jackets. Flares are back in a big way – inspired by Scooby Doo’s Velma over at Coach and glam rock at Tom Ford while a cropped sailor pant was also seen at Sonia Rykiel, Derek Lam and Gucci.

Over at Dries Van Noten a more 70’s hippy approach was taken with rainbow knits and floral dresses. Basically wherever you looked the catwalks were awash with 70s styling, cuts and motifs and there was absolutely nothing subtle about the references. The quesiton is how to wear these new retro designs without feeling like you're off for a SoulTrain disco night?

*A good place to start is with your trousers - nothing creates an instantly 70s look than swapping out your skinnies. Whether you opt for the proper flare, a slimmer boot cut variety as seen at Saint Laurent or a cropped sailor pant, you can keep the look anchored in reality by pairing your new trews with a simple striped sweater or clean cotton shirt. If you decide to take the full on plunge and do 70s head to toe, or just choose to update your denim wardrobe, keep your beauty firmly stuck in this century - Farrah waves and panstick are certainly not back on the fashion menu!
